 What is Chiropractic Medicine?

The word “chiropractic” combines the Greek words chier (hand) and praxis (action) and means “done by hand.” Chiropractic is an integrative type of medical care that takes a different approach from conventional medicine in the diagnoses, classification and treatment of medical problems.

The basic concepts of chiropractic medicine are as follows:

  • The body has a powerful ability to heal itself
  • The body’s structure (primarily that of the spine) and its function are closely related

Your spinal column is made up of 24 independent vertebrae. These vertebrae allow your body to move, twist and bend through every motion of your busy day. It also encases and helps protect the delicate nerve tissue that carries every communication between your brain and body. Dysfunction of these spinal segments can result in pain and discomfort. Chiropractic treatment has been shown to benefit patients with a variety of spinal conditions. The goal of chiropractic care is to normalize the relationship between structure and function, and assist the body as it heals naturally.

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure - mainly the spine - and its functioning. Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in a variety of techniques, including adjustments to the spine and other parts of the body, all with the goal of correcting functional problems that may result in back or neck pain, joint pain, particularly in the arms and legs, and headaches.

Why Consider Chiropractic Medicine?

When you have neck or back pain, normal activities such as walking, bending, reaching, and sleeping can become agonizing. Some people with neck or back problems may experience persistent weakness, numbness or tingling in their arms or legs.

If a spine-related disorder is affecting the quality of your life, it’s important to find the right medical professional to diagnose and treat your problem.

Chiropractic medicine has been used to successfully treat the following conditions:

Chiropractic Medicine at Ascension Columbia St. Mary's

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s offers chiropractic services within our medical clinics. We strive to find the root of your problem and will work with other health care professionals to fix the underlying condition.

Similar to an initial visit with your medical doctor, your chiropractor will ask about your health and area(s) of concern. You will also be asked about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem.

A thorough orthopaedic, neurologic and spinal examination will be performed to detect any structural or mechanical abnormalities. Advanced studies such as X-ray, MRI or CT may be ordered to better understand your condition. Once your problem has been identified, your chiropractor will explain the findings and suggested course of treatment.

Your chiropractor’s primary tool of treatment is through spinal adjustments or manipulations. The adjustments are given by hand and consist of applying pressure to areas of the spine that are out of alignment or that do not move properly within their range of motion. An adjustment restores the proper mechanics of the spine, enhancing joint function, correcting specific joint problems, and preventing injury due to improper spinal posture.

Your chiropractor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is best for your condition. Just as with any other medical treatment, it’s important to not stop treatment too early. Once on the road to recovery, often all that is needed to prevent a re-injury or relapse are regular maintenance exams. These can be monthly or even annually as time goes by.
